The ageless bollywood beauty Rekha turned 61 years on the 10th of this month. She was born on 1954 to Tamil actor Gemini Ganeshan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli.
She is one of the top actresses of bollywood and has worked in more than 180 films and sparred above 40 years in film industry. She had started her career as a child artist in a Telugu film ‘Rangula Ratnam’ in 1966. Her first debut in lead role was ‘Sawan Bhadon’ (1970).
In her initial career Rekha was criticised for her looks, but in late 70s she had undergone transformation and emerged as a sex symbol.
Rekha has always played strong characters throughout her career. She has also worked in art cinemas those are known in India as parallel cinemas.
Her representation in and as ‘Umrao Jaan’ is not only appreciated by critics, but also fetched her National Film Award for Best Actress in 1981.
She has also won three film fare awards- two best actress awards for her role in ‘Khoobsurat’(1980) and ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’(1988) and Best Supporting Actress in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi(1996).
Some of her other parallel cinemas are Shyam Benegal’s award winning ‘Kalyug’(1981), Govind Nihlani’s ‘Vijeta’(1982), Girish Karnad’s ‘Utsav’(1984) and Gulzar’s ‘Ijaazat’(1987) etc.
Rekha has awarded with Padmashri by the Indian government in 2010.
In 1990, Rekha married industrialist Mukesh Agrawall. He committed suicide after one year of marriage. Rumours have come across her life for links with co-stars.
