Here is some good news for the citizens of India, yet again!

When Maneka Gandhi was asked by the reporters on the sidelines of an event, to set afloat the campaign – ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ in 61 additional districts, whether there were chances of criminalizing marital rape by the government, she answered saying, “Now there is.”

Maneka Gandhi (Women and Child Development Minister) said on Tuesday that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA Government is reconsidering criminalizing marital rape, that an attempt has been made at the issue and a decision will soon be reached on it.

The Law Commission’s opinion on this matter was asked for by the Home Ministry, during its comprehensive review course of the criminal justice system. Over a month later, the statement had come, that the minister told the Rajya Sabha that the idea of marital rape does not apply in the Indian context.

Maneka Gandhi replied saying, “It is considered that the concept of marital rape, as understood internationally, cannot be suitably applied in the Indian context due to various factors e.g. level of education/illiteracy, poverty, myriad social customs and values, religious beliefs, mindset of the society to treat marriage as a sacrament, etc.,” when she was asked if the government had plans to criminalize marital rape earlier. The minister had come under fire over this reply.

But recently, she has confirmed that the Union minister later said that the government is deliberating taking steps to criminalize marital rape, on the condition that there is adequate evidence of sufficient number of such grievances.

Maneka has told the Indian Express that we are all aware that marital rape occurs frequently. “But women need to come and complain about this aspect of violence, and once there is enough data, the government could respond.”

Women who are victims of such offence need to rise against these evils of the society. They need to take a stand for themselves. All they have to do is register a complaint. Your complaint will help save not only your life but the lives of generations to come.
