Twitter users up in arms after Indian Prime Minister’s unwillingly sexist remark.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi might need a lesson in the art of the compliment.
Giving a speech at Dhaka University on Sunday during a two-day visit to neighbouring Bangladesh, Modi is reported to have said: “I am happy that Bangladesh Prime Minister, despite being a woman, has declared zero tolerance for terrorism.”
Infuriated comments have started pouring on social media shortly afterwards and the hashtags #DespiteBeingAWoman and #ModiInsultsWomen have been trending on Twitter ever since.
Here are a few examples:
#Despite
BeingAWoman is an insult of the worst kind! It makes women sound inferior to men & belittles all their hard work & achievements!

This wasn’t the first sexist remark by the Indian Prime Minister but Modi supporters still tried fighting back by using their own hashtag:
The Prime
Minister of India’s speeches are being micro-scrutinized to see if it can be
sensationalized!
