In a country like India, it is tough for a female politician to play a pivotal role in politics as they have to face caste, religion and creed problems. It is of no doubt that the most successful female politicians have had success due to their strong family political background, however, no one can even deny the work they have done for the welfare of the people. In modern India, many females have emerged and laid strong impact on the lives of people and engraved never ending devotion in their minds. Here are some of the popular women in Indian Politics that have influenced and changed the scenario of politics in the largest democratic country.

Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi is the name of one of the most prestigious and worldly recognized politicians. She was born in Italy and she studied at University of Cambridge in the year 1965. She is one of the longest serving presidents of congress in 127 years of history. She is also the president of the United Progressive Alliance. After entering politics, she was not taken seriously by people of India as she had no past experience as a politician. But with the passage of time she proved critics wrong and led the party from front and came into power in 2004. In 2009, the performance was repeated and won again.

Sushma Swaraj

Sushma Swaraj is the opposition leader of India in Lok Sabha and was born in Haryana. She is a BJP leader and was elected as a member of parliament six times for three terms. For a very short period, she was also chief minister of Delhi. She had been a member of Haryana Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1982 and from 1987 to 1990. She had also been Education Minister in BJP Lok Dal Government and cabinet minister during Vajpayee’s government.

Sheila Dikshit

Sheila Dikshit is one of the renowned women Politicians in India, born in Kapurthala in Punjab and elected as a chief minister of India since 1998. She is also friend of Sonia Gandhi, chief of congress party. She had also signified Lok Sabha seat in assembly. She was also the minister in Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure.

Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee began her career as a member of Indian National Congress and had a very long tenure in the party. She is the first chief minister among women in West Bengal. Her tenure comprises of 34 long years of left front government in West Bengal. She was also elected as the first woman to be the Railway minister of India. She got disappointed with Congress and launched her own Trinamool Congress in the year 1997. She became 11th chief minister of India in 2011 when she got victory in assembly elections held in West Bengal.
